Ram the guy in front of you and use him to clear the way through, causing a huge pile up in the process to delay other racers. See a competitor gain ground in an inside lane a car-width away? Simply slam into the car beside you, turning it into the other car’s path and causing a wreck. ‘Checking’ traffic not only clears those damn Sunday drivers out of your way, it also serves as a means to takedown opponents when not directly behind or adjacent to them. The most glaring change to the gameplay paradigm is the fact that colliding with traffic going in the same direction as the player is no longer lethal, in face, it’s useful. The gameplay additions don’t require any new button functions, most are context sensitive or simple tweaks to the formula. Maneuvering through tight spaces, pulling off powerslides and executing collisions all felt incredibly natural, thanks in part to the fact that the game was using the exact same controller layout and arcade physics as Burnout 3. The cars controlled exactly as they did in the last Burnout, with the same responsiveness in this early build as was present in the final polished version of the last game. While more Burnout 3 would hardly be a terrible thing, the cumulative effect of these relatively small changes provide for a satisfyingly fresh experience. Whereas the purchase of Criterion by EA served as a catalyst for a revolution within the franchise, Burnout Revenge is much more an evolution of an already proven formula, as several small tweaks and additions serve as the only real changes. Burnout Revenge takes all the elements that made Burnout 3: Takedown one of the best arcade racers of all time and expands on them, increasing the damage quota per race and providing an even bigger adrenaline rush than its predecessor as a result.
